Conrad Hilton

Conrad Nicholson Hilton was born in Socorro, Socorro County, New Mexico Territory (now New Mexico) to Augustus Halvorson "Gus" Hilton (born August Halvorsen Hilton) (Hilton, Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway, August 21, 1854 – San Antonio, Texas, January 19, 1919), a Norwegian, and wife (married in Fort Dodge, Iowa, February 12, 1885) Mary Genevieve Laufersweiler (Fort Dodge, Iowa, December 3, 1861 – Long Beach, California, August 26, 1947), a German-American.

Conrad's father Gus was the son of Halvor Nilsen (Hilton, Ullensaker, Akershus, March 11, 1810 – Hilton, Ullensaker, Akershus, October 15, 1864) and wife (married in Ullensaker, Akershus, December 15, 1839) Karoline "Kari" Hansdatter (Hilton, Ullensaker, Akershus, April 14, 1818 – Søndre, Ullensaker, Akershus, March 29, 1861). Gus was born on the Hilton family farm near Kløfta in Ullensaker, Norway, the only place in Europe, besides Germany, where the Hilton family still have relatives living. Gus emigrated to the United States in 1870. Conrad's mother was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of a German-born merchant, Conrad Laufersweiler (Germany, 1832 – Iowa, April 22, 1903) and his wife (married at Webster County, Iowa, January 15, 1861) Caroline Wasem (Germany, 1836 – Fort Dodge, Iowa, August 18, 1917), daughter of Adam Wasem (b. 1801, d. 1881) and wife Philippina Euler (d. 1837). Conrad's siblings were:

* Felice A. Hilton (December 6, 1885–February 12, 1968)
* Eva C. Hilton (December 29, 1889–1979)
* Carl H. Hilton (January 1892–1957)
* Julia Hilton (1895–1897)
* Rosemary J. Hilton (June 20, 1898–November 27, 1995)
* August H. "Boy" Hilton (1901–1929)
* Helen A. Hilton (January 30, 1906–February 22, 2003)

Conrad was educated at the New Mexico Military Institute, at St. Michael's College (now the College of Santa Fe), and at the New Mexico School of Mines (now New Mexico Tech). In his early twenties, he was a Republican representative in the first legislature of the newly-formed State of New Mexico.

Shortly after the United States entered World War I in 1917, Conrad Hilton enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Officers' Training Command, Presidio of San Francisco. Second Lieutenant Hilton arrived in France, February 14, 1918. His unit the 304th Labor Battalion, saw limited combat. February 11, 1919, Conrad Hilton was discharged at Camp Dix, New Jersey (now Fort Dix). While Conrad was in the army, his father Gus was killed in a car accident.

Conrad Hilton built a store in Socorro County, New Mexico, but he later moved to Texas. He entered the hotel business by buying the Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas, in 1919. The first high rise hotel he built was the El Paso Hilton (now the Plaza Hotel (El Paso)), which opened on November 20, 1930. He formed the Hilton Hotels Corporation in 1946. The company expanded into credit cards, car rentals, and other travel services.

During the Great Depression Hilton was nearly forced into bankruptcy and lost several of his hotels. He was retained as a manager and eventually bought them back.

Hilton had three wives: Mary Adelaide Barron (Kentucky, 27 April 1906 – Santa Monica, California, 20 November 1966) (married in Dallas, Texas, 7 September 1925 and divorced 11 June 1934, she later married secondly in Fort Worth, Texas, 1 June 1935 to Mack Saxon, who died on 8 May 1949), daughter of Thomas Mason Barron II (Kentucky, 18 February 1883 – living 1930) (a descendant of William I of Scotland) and wife (married c. 1905) Mary Mulligan (Kentucky, c. 1884 – living 1930); actress Zsa Zsa Gabor (married 1942, divorced 1946); and Mary Frances Kelly (married 1976 through his death in 1979).

He and Barron had three sons:

* Conrad Nicholson "Nicky" Hilton, Jr. (1926–1969) (Elizabeth Taylor's first husband.)
* William Barron Hilton (born in 1927)
* Eric Michael Hilton (born in 1932)

He and Zsa Zsa Gabor had one daughter, Constance Francesca Hilton (born in 1947), who is the only child born to any of the famous Gabor sisters.

Conrad Hilton died on January 3, 1979, in Santa Monica, California, at age 91 from natural causes. He is interred at Calvary Hill Cemetery, in Dallas, Texas. Calvary Hill is a Catholic cemetery. [[1]]

His estate founded the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize. He left US$250,000 to each of his surviving siblings and US$10,000 to each of his nieces and nephews. Most of his assets were willed to the Roman Catholic Church and charities. However, Conrad's son, Barron, contested the will and won in 1988. The net worth of Barron and his descendants then jumped to over US$335 million.

Conrad Hilton's autobiography, Be My Guest, was published in 1957 by Prentice Hall.

He is the great-grandfather of Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton. There are currently two members of the Hilton family named Conrad. One is Paris' younger brother, Conrad Hughes Hilton. The other is Conrad Nicholson Hilton III, son of Conrad Nicholson Hilton, Jr.

The Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston is named after Conrad Hilton, as is the College of Business Administration building at Loyola Marymount University.

Hilton Hotels Corporation

History

The original company was founded in 1919 by Conrad Hilton.

The Hotels Statler Company was acquired in 1954 for $111,000,000 in what was then the world's largest real estate transaction.

The company separated its international operations into a separate traded company on December 1, 1964, known as Hilton International Co.. In 1967 Trans World Corp., the holding company for Trans World Airlines, acquired the separated company. In 1986 it was sold to UAL Corp., the holding company for United Airlines, who became Allegis Corp. in an attempt to re-incarnate itself as a full service travel company encompassing Westin Hotels and Hertz rental cars in addition to Hilton International and United Airlines. In 1987 after a corporate putsch, the renamed UAL Corp. sold Hilton International to Ladbroke Group plc, a British leisure and gambling company, which in May 1999 adopted the name Hilton Group plc.

As a result, there have been two separate, fully independent companies operating hotels under the Hilton name. Those Hilton Hotels outside the US were, until recently, styled as Hilton International hotels. In addition, for many years hotels run by the Hilton Group in the US were called Vista International Hotels, while hotels operated by the American arm of Hilton outside the US were named Conrad Hotels. The Vista chain has been phased out, while Conrad is now restyled as one of the luxury brands of Hilton (along with The Waldorf-Astoria Collection) and operates hotels within the US, as well as abroad. To minimize consumer confusion, the American and British Hilton companies, for the last few years, had a joint marketing agreement under which they share the same logos, promote each other's brands and maintained joint reservation systems.

In 1971, Hilton acquired International Leisure Company, acquiring the Las Vegas Hilton and Flamingo Hilton with the purchase.[3]

HHC was granted the naming rights to the George R. Brown Convention Center in late 2003. The Hilton Americas in Downtown Houston, Texas, is connected to the convention center.

On December 29, 2005, Hilton Hotels Corporation agreed to re-acquire Hilton International along with its Conrad Hotels, Scandic Hotels and LivingWell Health Clubs affiliates from British-based Hilton Group plc for GBP 3.3 billion (or $5.71 billion) bringing the two groups back together. Hilton Group then re-assumed the name Ladbroke Group plc. On February 23, 2006, the deal closed, making Hilton Hotels the world's fifth largest hotel operator in number of rooms [4].

The Waldorf-Astoria Collection was announced on January 17, 2005 as a new Luxury Brand.

On March 1, 2007, Scandic Hotels was sold to EQT V Group.[5]

On July 3, 2007, Hilton Hotels Corp (NYSE: HLT), agreed to an all-cash buyout from The Blackstone Group LP in a $20.1 billion deal that would make Blackstone the world's largest hotel owner. The private equity group said it would combine cash from its real estate and corporate private equity funds to buy all outstanding Hilton shares for $47.50 each, a 32 percent premium over the July 3 closing stock price. The companies valued the deal at $26 billion including debt.

In October 2007, Christopher J. Nassetta is appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hilton.[6]

Richard Hilton

Richard Howard "Rick" Hilton[1] (born August 17, 1955) is an American heir of the Hilton Hotel chain, a real estate broker and developer specializing in exclusive, high-end property, Chairman of Hilton & Hyland Real Estate[2], and father of Paris Hilton, Nicky Hilton, Barron Hilton, and Conrad Hilton.

Biography

Rick Hilton was born in Los Angeles, California, the sixth of eight children of Barron Hilton (who was born to Hilton Hotel founder Conrad Hilton) and Marilyn June Hawley. In 1978, Rick graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. His brothers and sisters are William Barron Hilton, Jr. (born 1948); Hawley Anne Hilton (born 1949); Stephen Michael Hilton (born 1950); David Alan Hilton (born 1952); Sharon Constance Hilton (born 1953); Daniel Kevin Hilton (born 1962); and Ronald Jeffrey Hilton (born 1963). The fortune of their father, Barron Hilton, is currently valued at $2.3 billion. [3]

Rick Hilton is currently chairman of Hilton and Hyland Real Estate, a successful Beverly Hills real estate firm that he founded with partner Jeff Hyland.[4] Rick Hilton's net worth is estimated to be valued at around $800 million.[5]

Family

Rick Hilton married the former Kathy Richards on 24 November 1979. They have four children:

* Paris Whitney Hilton (born on 17 February 1981 (1981-02-17) (age 26) in New York City, New York)
* Nicholai Olivia "Nicky" Hilton (born on 5 October 1983 (1983-10-05) (age 24) in New York City, New York)
* Barron Nicholas Hilton (born on 7 November 1989 (1989-11-07) (age 18))

In 2005, Rick, Kathy, and their two sons moved into a 1930s Bel-Air mansion purchased for $10 million. The family also maintains a $6.3 million home in The Hamptons on Long Island, New York.

Barron Hilton

William Barron Hilton I[1] (born October 23, 1927) is an American heir and hotelier, co-chairman of the Hilton Hotel chain and owner of the San Diego Chargers and paternal grandfather of Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton.

Biography

He was born in Dallas, Texas, the second son of Conrad Nicholson Hilton and Mary Adelaide Barron. His father founded Hilton Hotels. His brothers are Erik Hilton, and the late Conrad Nicholson Hilton, Jr., called "Nicky", who was actress Elizabeth Taylor's first husband (1950). He also has a younger half-sister (b. 1947), Francesca Hilton, whose mother is Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Barron was active for several years in organizing and managing businesses in Los Angeles, and was also a member of the board of directors of the Statler Hotels Deljjaware Corporation and of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

In 1954, he was elected a vice-president of Hilton Hotels Corporation, of which his father was president. The announcement was made on November 16, 1954, by P. Williford, Executive Vice President.

Barron also became president of the Carte Blanche credit card firm, was owner of a $6,000,000 orange juice company, head of a business leasing jets and an investor in a Texas oil company.

In 1960, Barron founded the Los Angeles Chargers team of the new American Football League. He moved his team to San Diego for the 1961 season. The team played in the first two American Football League championships, losing both to the Houston Oilers.

Barron Hilton assumed the presidency of the Hilton Hotel chain in 1966. In 1970, he was responsible for getting Hilton Hotels into the gambling business.

When Barron's father died in 1979, he left the bulk of his estate to the Roman Catholic Church and other charities, and almost nothing to his children. Barron contested the will because of his lifelong career of working to build the hotel company and won his lawsuit in 1988. His half-sister, Francesca, lost her case and received nothing.

In the Forbes 400, which lists the 400 richest Americans, Barron Hilton's worth in 2007 is listed at $2.3 billion.[1]

After the success of the first season, The Simple Life was followed by two more seasons on Fox. The network canceled the show after a dispute between Hilton and Richie, but the show was subsequently aired by E! Hilton founded Heiress Records, a sub-label of Warner Bros. Records, in 2004 and released her self-titled debut album, Paris, under that label on August 22, 2006. Although the album reached number six on the Billboard 200 for a week, its total sales volume has been low.[15][16] All Music Guide commented that the album was "more fun than anything released by Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson, and a lot fresher, too." On the whole, critical reception was mixed.[17] On July 16, 2007 Hilton confirmed that she is working on a new album, to be released in late 2007.[18][19][20]

As an author

In the autumn of 2004, Hilton released an autobiographical book, Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose, co-written by Merle Ginsberg, which includes full color photographs of her and her advice on life as an heiress. Hilton reportedly received a $100,000 advance payment for this book. Some in the media panned the writing as amateurish, and the book was parodied by Robert Mundell on The Late Show with David Letterman. The book became a New York Times bestseller. Hilton followed it up with a designer diary, also with Ginsberg, called Your Heiress Diary: Confess It All to Me.

Activism

Animal rights

In 2007, after watching a graphic video about animals raised for their fur, Hilton announced her support of vegetarianism and her anti-fur beliefs.[21] Hilton said:
“ From that point [after witnessing the video shown by Heather Mills], I've never worn fur and I never will. I also haven't eaten any meat since. I just survive on pasta and stuff like that. I was grossed out. It was disgusting. ”

Hilton helped design a collection of purses for Japanese label Samantha Thavasa,[22] and also a jewelry line for Amazon.com.[23] In 2004, Hilton was involved in the creation of a perfume line by Parlux Fragrances. Originally set to be a small release, high demand led to a wider release before December 2004. The launch was followed by a 47% increase in sales of Parlux products, predominantly due to sales of the Hilton-branded perfume.[24] After the success of Hilton's perfume, Parlux Fragrances released several more perfumes with her name, including fragrances for men.[25] Paris Hilton will launch a new fragrance in October 2007, called "Can Can" by Paris Hilton. This is her fourth women's fragrance after "Paris Hilton," "Just Me," and "Heiress." In January 2007, Hilton released the DreamCatchers line of hair extensions in partnership with Hair Tech International.[26] In early August 2007, Hilton signed a licensing agreement with Antebi for a signature footwear line, "Paris Hilton Footware", featuring stilettos, platforms, flats, wedges, and a sports collection, expected to reach stores in 2008.[27] In mid August 2007, Hilton launched a line of tops, dresses, coats, and jeans at Kitson boutique in Los Angeles.[28]

In 2005, Hilton lent her name to a chain of nightclubs owned by Fred Khalilian and known as Club Paris. This association ended in January 2007 after she had failed to attend several scheduled promotional appearances.[29]

Personal life

Hilton was engaged to fashion model Jason Shaw from mid-2002 to early 2003, and Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, from May 29, 2005 to November 2005. Thereafter, she began dating another Greek shipping heir, Stavros Niarchos III, before breaking up in May 2006. In an attempt to rediscover herself, Hilton imposed a ban on sexual activity for one year starting in July 2006, although was found kissing her friend Brandon Davis five days later.[30] Hilton told Regis and Kelly: "One-night stands are not for me. I think it's gross when you just give it up. Guys want you more, if you don't just hand it to them on a platter."[31] Paris is currently in a relationship with Swedish model Alexander von Zweigbergk Väggö.

In January 2007, Hilton's private life created headlines with the launch of ParisExposed.com, a website that featured images of personal and medical documents, video, and other private material, allegedly obtained when the contents of a storage locker rented by Hilton were auctioned off due to lack of payment.[32] CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 discussed footage obtained from the website which features Hilton using several ethnic slurs.[33] On February 3, 2007 Hilton obtained a temporary injunction against ParisExposed.com, closing down the website for a short period of time before the site went back online.

Hilton is known for her love of small dogs, including a Yorkshire Terrier and a female Chihuahua named Tinkerbell. Tinkerbell (born October 31, 2002 in Athens, Greece[34]) was purchased from a Greek breeder named Andreas Evagelopoulos at the price of 3,000€. Hilton is frequently seen carrying Tinkerbell (dubbed an "accessory dog") at social events and functions, and in all five seasons of television reality show The Simple Life. In 2004, Tinkerbell "authored" a memoir, The Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries. On August 12, 2004, Tinkerbell went missing after Hilton's apartment was robbed, and a $5,000 reward was offered for her safe return.[35] She was found six days later. By December 1, 2004, Tinkerbell was again spotted with Paris Hilton at various events. Hilton has also purchased a male Chihuahua on 25 July 2007 from Pets of Bel Air in Los Angeles.[36]

The leak of a three-year-old home-made sex video, called 1 Night in Paris, of Hilton with her then-boyfriend Rick Salomon a week prior to the premiere of her Fox reality series The Simple Life attracted worldwide attention in late 2003.

Driving violations

In September 2006, Hilton was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content of 0.08%, the level at which it is illegal to drive in California. Hilton's driving license was subsequently suspended in November 2006,[37] and in January 2007 she pled no contest to the alcohol-related reckless driving charge.[38] Her punishment was 36 months' probation and fines of about $1,500.[39] On January 15, 2007, Hilton was pulled over for driving with a suspended license and signed a document acknowledging that she was not permitted to drive.[40] On February 27, 2007 Hilton was caught driving 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, again with a suspended license. She also did not have her headlights on even though it was after dark. Prosecutors in the office of the Los Angeles City Attorney charged that those actions, along with the failure to enroll in a court-ordered alcohol education program constituted a violation of the terms of her probation.[37]

On May 4, 2007 Hilton was sentenced by Judge Michael T. Sauer to 45 days in jail for violating her probation. Initially, Hilton planned to appeal the sentence, and supported an online petition[41] asking California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a pardon.[42] The petition to Governor Schwarzenegger was created and organized on May 5, 2007 by Joshua Morales, a loyal fan of Ms. Hilton's who was upset by the sentence Paris received.[43] In response, various opponents started a counter-petition to maintain the sentence.[44] Both petitions attracted tens of thousands of signatures. Hilton later switched lawyers and dropped her plans to appeal.[45]

Hilton was required to begin her jail term on June 5, 2007,[46] and checked herself into the Century Regional Detention Facility, an all female jail in Lynwood, California after attending the 2007 MTV Movie Awards on June 3, 2007. With credit for good behavior, it was anticipated that Hilton would only serve 23 days of her 45-day sentence;[47] however, in an unexpected turn of events, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca signed orders on the morning of June 7, reassigning Hilton to 40 days of home confinement with an electronic monitoring device due to an unspecified medical condition.[48] Sheriff Baca commented on the release saying, "My message to those who don't like celebrities is that punishing celebrities more than the average American is not justice,"[49] contesting that under normal circumstances, Hilton would not have served any time in jail, and he added that "The special treatment, in a sense, appears to be because of her celebrity status ... She got more time in jail".[50] On the same day that Hilton was released from jail, Judge Michael Sauer summoned her to reappear in court the following morning (June 8) as the sentencing statement had explicitly said she would serve time in jail with "No work furlough. No work release. No electronic monitoring."[51] At the hearing he declined to be briefed by Hilton's attorney in private chambers on the nature of her condition and sent her back to jail to serve out her original 45-day sentence. Upon hearing the sentence, Hilton shouted, "It's not right!" and started screaming, requesting to hug her mother who was present in the courtroom.[52][53] Concern about Hilton's condition led to her being moved to the medical wing of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, and she was moved back to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood on June 13.[54]

While in jail, Hilton was influenced by prison minister Marty Angelo: Hilton referred to starting a "new beginning" during her interview with talk show host Larry King on June 28, 2007, two days after being released from jail,[55] and quoted from Angelo's autobiography, entitled Once Life Matters: A New Beginning. On June 9, 2007 Marty Angelo petitioned sentencing Judge Michael Sauer[56] asking to serve out the remainder of Hilton's jail sentence if the judge would release her to an alternative treatment program,[57] but the petition was turned down.

Hilton was released from jail on June 26, 2007. In total, Hilton served 22 days in detention, counting her day-long home confinement.[58] Hilton announced she would be visiting Rwanda in November 2007 as a post-jail vow and to spread awareness about that African country.[59]

While Hilton has been quoted as saying that she is the "iconic blonde of the decade"' and comparing herself to Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe (a claim she later denied in the May 2007 issue of Harper's Bazaar),[60] she will reportedly appear in the 2007 Guinness World Records as the world's "Most Overrated Celebrity".[61] In a poll conducted by the Associated Press and AOL, Hilton was voted the second "Worst Celebrity Role Model of 2006", behind Britney Spears.[62] Critics have alleged that Hilton epitomizes the title of famous for being famous; echoing that sentiment, the Associated Press conducted what they called an experiment in late February 2007, trying not to report on Hilton for a whole week.[63]

On May 11, 2007, a statue by Daniel Edwards entitled Paris Hilton Autopsy was revealed at Capla Kesting Fine Art in New York. Hilton is depicted by a clay model as dead, naked, and with her legs spread. The artist considers the sculpture a means of educating high school seniors about drunk driving. [64]

Guitarist Alex Lifeson of the progressive rock band Rush referenced Hilton during their August 8, 2004 concert in New York City on the R30: 30th Anniversary Tour. In one of his trademark rants during the instrumental track "La Villa Strangiato", he spoke as if he was Hilton, and ended with an ad libbed song (joined by Geddy and Neil) which included him yelling, "Where's your brain?" and "You make me sick!"[65]

Notable parodies of Paris Hilton include the following:

* In the MMOG World of Warcraft, Haris Pilton can be found in the World's End Tavern of the lower part of Shattrath City accompanied by her dog Tinkerbell, and her job tag reads "Socialite".
* In The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, London Tipton, the daughter of the Tipton Hotel's rich owner, is a parody of Paris Hilton.[66]
* Shortly after Hilton was incarcerated in June 2007, a music video spoofing her jail sentence was released on the popular video-sharing website YouTube. Featuring a Paris Hilton lookalike extolling the virtues of jail to the tune of her song "Stars Are Blind", the video achieved instant notoriety, garnering over three million hits in five days.[67][68]
* South Park portrays a very unflattering parody of Hilton in "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset" in which Paris opens a store with everything girls need to be like her.[69]

The Founder Of Hilton Hotels

Conrad Hilton

Conrad Nicholson Hilton, Sr. (December 25, 1887 – January 3, 1979) was an American hotelier and founder of the Hilton Hotel chain.

Biography

* Felice A. Hilton (December 6, 1885–February 12, 1968)
* Eva C. Hilton (December 29, 1889–1979)
* Carl H. Hilton (January 1892–1957)
* Julia Hilton (1895–1897)
* Rosemary J. Hilton (June 20, 1898–November 27, 1995)
* August H. "Boy" Hilton (1901–1929)
* Helen A. Hilton (January 30, 1906–February 22, 2003)
